Breast Enlargement (Breast Augmentation/ Breast Implants)

This is a common operation in Australia. It is done to improve the size and shape of the breasts, and can help a woman to enhance her self-esteem and body image, and optimise the balance between breast and body proportions.

Breasts may be small due to lack of development during the teenage years, due to the effects of pregnancy and breast-feeding, due to weight loss, or due to the aging process.
Many women have breasts that differ in size (asymmetry) and augmentation can improve the balance when the two breasts are mismatched in size and/or shape.

Augmentation is achieved by inserting a man-made implant either above or below the pectoralis muscle, through a small incision.

  Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)

This is an operation that has one of the highest patient-satisfaction ratings done by plastic surgeons. It is done to reduce the size of the breasts and at the same time improve the shape and position of the breasts on the chest wall.

Overly large breasts or breasts that are disproportionately large for the body may be a cause of symptoms such as neck and back pain. A breast reduction may improve or alleviate these symptoms. Other women may have self-esteem and lifestyle issues because of large breasts – they are unable to engage in activities or sports as they would like, may be unable to wear the type of clothing they desire, have problems with relationships, or simply feel embarrassed.

There are a number of techniques for breast reduction. All involve removing some skin and breast tissue, reshaping the remaining breast tissue, and movement of the nipple and areola.

  Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

This operation is done to improve the shape of breasts and raise them on the chest wall when they are sagging, but without reducing their size. This can give a more youthful appearance.

Sagging of the breasts, and loss of shape, occurs as the skin loses its elasticity with the effects of gravity, the normal ageing process, pregnancy and breast-feeding, and significant weight loss.

In some women, placing an implant at the same time as the mastopexy can improve the shape, firmness, and size of the breasts.

  Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia)
Gynaecomastia is a medical term for enlarged breasts in a male. This condition can have profound psychological and social consequences for a man, and many will have been too embarrassed at first to seek treatment.

There are a number of causes of gynaecomastia. It is relatively common in young male teenagers due to normal hormonal imbalances during puberty, but often settles without treatment. Other causes include obesity, liver disease, abnormal hormonal problems, and the use of certain medications or anabolic steroids. These causes need to be excluded before undergoing surgery.

The technique of male breast reduction will usually involve liposuction alone, surgical excision alone through an incision at the edge of the areola, or a combination of the two procedures.
